Xyzal is an antihistamic drug that helps in reducing the effects of histamine, the natural chemical in the body. The effects of histamine in the body can lead to symptoms like sneezing, watery eyes, runny nose and itching.
The generic name of Xyzal is levocetrizine.
Indications of Xyzal (Levocetirizine)
Indications of Xyzal (Levocetirizine) include:
- It is used in the treatment of perennial allergies (year- round allergies) in adults and also in children who are 6 months of age or more.
- It is used in treatment of itching as well as swelling caused by hives (utricaria) in adults and also in children who are 6 months of age or more.
Side- effects of Xyzal (Levocetirizine)

- Difficult or painful micturation (urination)
- Little or absolutely no urination
- Feeling light- headed, feeling like passing out
- Signs of ear infection including ear pain or full feeling, fever, trouble hearing, fussiness in a child, drainage from ear
- Worsening allergy or utricaria
- Allergic reaction to Xyzal (Levocetirizine) manifesting itself with symptoms like difficulty in breathing, swelling on lips, throat, tongue and face

How to take Xyzal (Levocetirizine)?
You must take Xyzal (Levocetirizine) exactly as your doctor instructs you to take. Follow all the instructions given to you by your doctor. Take the medication in exact dose as advised by your doctor. Do not take the drug is smaller or larger amount. Also, take it for the exact period of time as told to you by your doctor. Do not take for shorter or longer duration of time.
You must keep all the guidelines in mind while taking the medication and when you are giving the medication to the child, you must be very cautious. Do not give more than prescribed dose to your child because the child absorbs the drug twice as much of same dose of this drug as an adult. Taking more medication can cause severe drowsiness in the child. So, it is very important to monitor the dose in kids.
Xyzal (Levocetirizine)is usually taken in evening. You can take Xyzal (Levocetirizine) with or without food.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
The drugs should be taken in pregnancy only when it is strictly prescribed by the doctor. It should be taken only if the benefits of Xyzal (Levocetirizine) overweigh the possible risk factors associated with this drug.
If you are a nursing mother, you must be very cautious while taking this drug as it is excreted into human milk. You must take it only if prescribed by your doctor.

It can pass into the breast milk and it is an alarming condition for nursing baby. Never use this medicine when you are breast feeding to a newly born baby. Use the medicine exactly according to the instructions of the doctor and never cross the limits in its use because large or less quantity of medicine might create problem for patient. Larger quantity of this medicine may cause a severe drowsiness and will not effect in such a way as required. Patient can use this medicine with or without the food; liquid suspension of the drug can be measured by dose measuring spoon but not regular table spoon.
In case of any problem, you may ask from your doctor about the medicine use and tell him if your conditions become worsen or not getting well. Room temperature is favorable condition for storing the medicine and do not keep it in heat or moisture condition like washrooms or kitchen. Try to use the medicine on the same time of each day and do not skip any dose for the better result. By mistake, if you skip any dose then it is better to take as soon as possible. Remember that dosage very near to the next time is not a good attempt because there is a chance of over dosing in this way.
