Drug Uses
Rogaine is available without a prescription. It is not known how this medication works, but reports indicate that Rogaine has been known to reduce hair loss and improve hair growth in men and women. Rogaine does not work for everyone. Your doctor will decide if Rogaine is suitable for you.
Application
Before using Rogaine make sure that the scalp is dry and that the skin is intact. Apply 1ml to the area of the scalp where hair loss has occurred, twice a day – morning and night. Gently massage the solution into the scalp. Ensure that you wash your hands thoroughly afterwards. Do not use more than 1ml per treatment, irrespective of the size of the bald area. Response varies from person to person, but generally evidence of hair growth is noticed within four months of treatment.
Rogaine may also be applied using a pump spray applicator, an extended spray-tip applicator, or a rub-on applicator. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how to use these applicators properly.
When treatment with Rogaine is stopped, any new hair that has grown during treatment will be lost.
If there is no evidence of improvement after four months of use, it is recommended that treatment with Rogaine be stopped.
Missed Treatment
If you miss a treatment, ignore the missed one. Never use more than 1ml of Rogaine in one treatment and never use Rogaine more than twice a day.
Precautions
Do not use Rogaine if your scalp is damaged or sunburnt – this will cause too much of the solution being absorbed, which may cause dangerous symptoms.
Rogaine is for use on the scalp only. Never apply Rogaine to any other part of the body.
Never use any other topical treatments on your scalp while using Rogaine, unless approved by your doctor.
If you have heart disease inform your doctor. Minoxidil has been known to affect the heart.
Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding should discuss the risks of using Rogaine with their doctor because it has not yet been established if Rogaine can harm an unborn fetus or if it is passed into breast milk.
Side-effects
Call for emergency medical assistance if any of the following allergic symptoms occur: difficulty in breathing, hives, or swelling of the lips, face, tongue or throat.
Contact your doctor if you experience chest pain, increased heart rate, chest pain, dizziness, fainting, or lightheadedness.
Less serious side-effects may include headache, itchiness, dryness, and flaking of the scalp.
