The generic name of microzide is hydrochlorothiazide. It is a thiazide diuretic or a water pill which helps the body in preventing the absorption of excess salt due to which fluid retention can occur.
This drug is used for the treatment of high BP. Reduction in the high blood pressure helps in the prevention of kidney problems, strokes and heart attacks. It shows its effect by increasing the production of urine in your body. This helps in the removal of excess water and salt from the body.
This drug also causes edema - decreases the excess fluid present in the body which is caused due to conditions like liver disorder (cirrhosis), heart failure or kidney problems. This reduces the symptoms like swollen feet/ankles or trouble breathing.
How to Use
Take this medicine as directed by your physician/doctor, generally once with/without food every day in the morning. Don’t alter the amounts of dosage or consume for more time than recommended. The directions on medical prescription should be followed. Keep in mind that if you consume this medicine during your bedtime, then it might happen that your sleep gets disturbed because you might want to urinate. It is advised that you consume this drug at least before 4 hours of your sleep. Sometimes, your doctor may change the dosage so that you get the maximum benefits.
You must get your BP checked regularly. A frequent doctor visit is required. Conditions which are responsible for very low BP are: diarrhea, vomiting, heart disorder, heavy sweating, dialysis, consuming water pills- diuretics and a diet low on salt. Follow the instructions given by your doctor about the amount and type of liquids you should consume during the intake of hydrochlorothiazide. Let your doctor know if you have a prolonged ailment due to which you experience vomiting or diarrhea.
Stop the use of this drug and inform your doctor immediately if you have a severe side effect like:
- Eye pain,
- Dry mouth,
- Vision problems;
- Feeling weak,
- Fast or irregular heartbeat;
- Muscle pain
- Muscle weakness;
- Tingly feeling;
- Skin rash;
- Skin blisters
- Upper stomach pain,
- Dark urine
- Clay-colored excreta
- Loss of appetite
Less severe side effects are as follows:
- Blurred vision.
- Mild stomach pain
Don’t use this drug if are not able to pass urine or if you are hypersensitive to hydrochlorothiazide.
Let your physician know if you have:
- Kidney disease;
- Liver disease;
Pregnancy and Microzide
This drug is not expected to cause any harm to a fetus/unborn baby. Inform the doctor if you get pregnant or planning to conceive during treatment.
Hydrochlorothiazide has the potential to pass into maternal milk and cause damage to a nursing baby. Don’t consume this medicine if you are breastfeeding your baby.
Microzide is known to treat high blood pressure and edema.
Take Microzide only on a doctor’s direction. The drug should be taken in the morning. It is better to take Microzide with a glass of milk or meal as it reduce stomach pain or stomach upset.
If a dosage is missed, you can take it as soon as you remember it. And if it is nearly time for the next dosage, it is better to skip the missed one and continue with the regular dosage. Well, do not take two dosages.
After taking Microzide, always be careful when driving and doing some hazardous activities. If you feel drowsiness, dizziness or blurred vision, better avoid these activities.
