Diflucan (fluconazole) is a potent antifungal medicine. It is used in the treatment of many infections caused by fungus.
Fungus can cause infect any part of the body like the mouth, throat, oesophagus, lungs, genital area, bladder as well as blood. This drug helps in warding off the fungal infectivity from any part of the body.
It is also indicated in preventing fungal infections in the people having a compromised immunity due to, cancer treatment, bone marrow transplant or diseases like AIDS.
Indications of Diflucan (fluconazole)
Diflucan (fluconazole) is used in the treatment of:
- Oropharyngeal candidiasis
- Esophageal candidiasis
- Vaginal candidiasis
- Candida urinary tract infections
- Systemic Candida infections like disseminated candidiasis, candidemia, and pneumonia
- Cryptococcal meningitis
- It is also used in cutting down the possibilities of candidiasis in the patients who are undergoing bone marrow transplant who take radiation therapy and/ or chemotherapy.
Side-effects of Diflucan (fluconazole)
Some side-effects of Diflucan (fluconazole) need emergency side-effects while some of the side- effects go on their own.
The serious side-effects of Diflucan (fluconazole) include:
- Allergic reaction: This is one of the most serious but, rare side- effects of taking Diflucan (fluconazole). It can cause symptoms like swelling on face, tongue, lips and throat, difficulty breathing, and hives or rashes. It can occur if you are allergic to any ingredient of this drug.
- Headache accompanied with severe dizziness, fainting, pounding or fast heartbeat and chest pain.
- Flu symptoms, body aches, chills and fever
- Unusual weakness
- Easy bruising or bleeding
- Convulsions (seizures)
- Hepatic issues- nausea, yellowing of skin ,pain in upper stomach, clay- colored stools, itching, dark urine, feeling tired, or eyes (jaundice)
- Skin lesions or rashes
- Severe skin reaction manifesting as swelling on face or tongue, skin pain, burning in eyes, sore throat, fever, occurrence or purple or red rashes spreading to face, upper body and other parts ultimately causing blistering and peeling

How to take Diflucan (fluconazole)
You must take Diflucan (fluconazole) as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all his instructions and take the medicine is exact same dose.
The drug dose depends on the condition that the drug is meant to treat. Vaginal infection requires a dose of one pill while other infections might require a double dose.
You can take this drug with or without food.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
The effects of this drug on a pregnant lady are not clear. But, to be on a safer side, you must discuss all the potential risks with your doctor. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or have a plan to conceive during the course of treatment.
This drug is secreted in the milk in the concentration similar to the maternal plasma concentration. Thus, a nursing woman should also be cautious while taking this drug.

Diflucan comes in capsule form and should be taken with liquid. The common dosage of Diflucan is one capsule daily. Take the dosage prescribed by your doctor. Usually Diflucan is taken once a day. Do not discontinue the use of Diflucan even if you are feeling better. Consult a doctor before you stop taking Diflucan. Do not take this medication for longer than the period prescribed.
If a dose is missed, it can be taken as soon as you remember, as long as it does not clash with the next scheduled dose. In this case, rather skip the missed dose. Never take a double dose.
The consumption of alcohol while taking Diflucan can affect the liver, therefore alcohol should be avoided. Refrain from driving or operating machinery in the early stages of taking Diflucan in case you have adverse reactions. If you experience excessive dizziness or lightheadedness, consult your doctor.

Diflucan comes only with mild side effects and some of lesser-known side effects are headache, dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach upset. These side effects go away after some days. But if the symptoms persist, contact your doctor immediately. Diflucan also comes with less allergic reactions like rashes, itching, trouble breathing and swelling.
The drug rarely causes serious liver disease. But if you experience severe stomach or abdominal pain, dark urine, yellowing eyes or skin, tiredness and vomiting, you should have to call your doctor.
Though it is not yet known if the drug effects birth control drugs, it is better to use some other drug control methods if you do not want to get pregnant soon.
Diflucan can cause dizziness and this can increase if mixed with alcohol and other medicines. Once you have taken Diflucan, better do not drive or perform any hard task unless you know how the drug reacts in your body.
The drug should only be used by those for whom it has been prescribed; do not share the drug with others. The drug should be stored at room temperature, away from light and moisture.
