A Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drug (NSAID), Volatrol comes in tablet, suppositories, and gel form. The drug contains the active ingredient diclofenac sodium. The drug acts by blocking the action of Cyclo Oxygenase (COX), which are involved in the production of various chemicals in the body, including prostaglandins. These Prostaglandins are produced in response to injury and certain diseases and conditions, which leads to pain, inflammation and swelling. The drug blocks the release of Prostaglandins, which leads to relief of pain.
Though the drug is widely prescribed, some persons who have heart, liver and kidney problems, should be cautious while using the drug. They have to consult the doctor on the various side effects of the drug. In some rare cases, Voltarol is seen to cause Stevens-Johnson syndrome (serious blistering or peeling of the skin). The drug is also not considered safe during pregnancy, especially in the first and third trimesters. When taken during the trimester, Volatrol can increase the length of labor and sometimes cause complications for the baby. The drug is known to pass to the breast milk but in normal doses it is unlikely to harm a baby.
