Sumycin
Sumycin is tetracycline, which treats the infections of the bacteria. The drug acts on the body by lowering the production of proteins that is needed for the bacteria to survive.
The drug has to be taken as per the direction of a physician. If Sumycin is stopped in the middle of a course, the infection may not be completely cured and there is a chance that the infection may surface again in due course. There is also a chance that the bacteria may become resistant to the drug and in due course Sumycin will not be effective in treating infections.
When taking Sumycin, it is good not to use any diary products and antacids that contain magnesium, aluminium and calcium for at least two to three hours before and after taking the medicine. The drug should also be not used for a long period as it could lead to a second infection.
The doctor should be informed about all the medical conditions before he administers Sumycin as the drug may interact with certain conditions. The doctor may change the dosage of Sumycin if a person is pregnant or breast-feeding. This is because the drug may cause several complications in the unborn kid or a newborn child. The dosage may be altered if there is a kidney problem or stomach problems or diarrhea.
There is also a possibility that some medicines could interact with Sumycin. A person should be very careful when using Acitretin, isotretinoin, Digoxin, methoxyflurane, lithium, methotrexate, anticoagulants, oral contraceptives, penicillin and atovaquone. Alcohol should be avoided when using this drug as mixing the two may lead to blurred vision or dizziness. The doctor should also have an idea about all the prescriptive, non-prescriptive, dietary supplements and herbal supplements that a person is using before he could administer Sumycin.
In case of diarrhoea, it should not be treated self. A doctor should have to be contacted for the treatment of diarrhoea. A person taking Sumycin should avoid sunlight as the skin becomes very sensitive after using the drug. When going out, a person should always have some protective covering. There is also a possibility that Sumycin would also have an impact on the lab tests. So it is good to inform the technician or the doctor about the drug before any lab test.
For children, the drug is generally not prescribed. It may cause permanent discolouring of the teeth. Moreover, there is no proof of safety of this drug in children below eight years.
As like all medicines, a person taking Sumycin can come across certain side effects. Some of the side effects seen with Sumycin are blurred vision, diarrhea, difficulty in swallowing, headache, fever, rashes, hives, indigestion, appetite loss, pain in the joint, sores in the mouth, swelling/itching in the rectum and stomach aches. The harsh side effects known with Sumycin include itching, rashes, breathing difficulty, swelling, (tongue, lips, mouth, face), nausea, sensitivity to sun, irritation in the vagina, discharge from vagina and vomiting.
