Imitrex (sumatriptan)

Imitrex is available in brand names Imitrex and Imitrex Nasal. The generic name of Imitrex is sumatriptan.

Imitrex is mainly used against headache. A serotonin 5-HT1 receptor agonist, the drug works by contracting the brain vessels. Imitrex also reduces the substances that trigger headache, pain and other symptoms, thus giving relief from the pains.

The drug is available in tablet and nasal spray form. It has to be noted that the medicine will only cure headache that has previously started and will not cut the number of attacks or prevent headaches. There is a tendency among people to buy Imitrex for headaches. But this is not a good practise as the drug should only be bought after consulting a doctor.

A person taking Imitrex should follow certain things. After taking one pill of Imitrex, the next pill should only be taken after two hours. This is the same for nasal Imitrex sprays. A person should not use more than 200 mg of the pill and 40 mg of the nasal spray within a period of 24 hours.

Imitrex has to be avoided if a person has allergies to sumatriptan. The drug should also be discarded if a person has bowel issues, angina, liver problems, high blood pressure, circulation problems and heart related diseases.

A person having seizures, kidney diseases, diabetes, coronary artery disease, menopause, high cholesterol, hysterectomy should consult with the doctor about all the risks involved in taking Imitrex. It is good not to use the drug when pregnant and when nursing as it could cause harm to the fetus and the newborn babe.

There are many drugs that could interact with Imitrex. This drug should not be used within 24 hours ahead or after taking eletriptan, almotriptan, frovatriptan, rizatriptan, naratriptan, zolmitriptan, methysergide, ergotamine, dihydroergotamine, ergonovine and methylergonovine. A person who has used monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) in the last 14 days should not take Imitrex. Some antidepressant drugs like citalopram, duloxetine, escitalopram, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, sertraline and venlafaxine are known to interact with Imitrex.

There is a possibility that Imitrex can lead to severe side effects on the heart. However, this is only a rare side effect and a person having a history of heart problems should avoid taking this headache pill or spray.

If persons come across any uneasiness or any side effects after using Imitrex, it is better to give up the drug and contact the doctor at the earliest. Some of the allergies that are noticed with Imitrex include hives, rashes, breathing problems and swelling of lips, mouth or tongue. Some of the very serious Imitrex side effects include heavy feeling, chest pain, nausea, pain spreading to arms/shoulder, numbness, sweating, confusion, vision problems, speech problems, pounding heart rate, muscle stiffness, vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhea. The lesser Imitrex side effects include mild diarrhea, nausea, muscle pain, vomiting, skin redness, sneezing, congestion, runny nose, cough, pain in nose/throat, burning sensation, unusual taste in mouth, sleepiness, sweating and dizziness.
