Diovan

diovanDiovan is a drug prescribed for treating high blood pressure. The drug is also given to reduce the risk of death after a heart failure.

Belonging to a group of medicines called angiotensin II receptor antagonists, Diovan keeps away narrowing of the blood vessels, which helps in improved blood flow and lowering of blood pressure.

The drug can be taken with food or in empty stomach. Always follow your doctor’s direction while taking Diovan. Even if you feel fine after taking the medicine, you should not discontinue the medication. Once the drug is taken, it can take two to four weeks for your blood pressure to stabilise. Even if the symptoms do not improve after four weeks, immediately consult your doctor.

The drug has to be avoided if you have allergies to valsartan. It is always better to inform your doctor about all your medical conditions before he prescribes the drug. Tell the doctor if you have kidney or liver diseases and congestive heart failure.

While taking Diovan, avoid alcohol as it can lower blood pressure, which can lead to many complications. Potassium supplements and salt substitutes should also be avoided while you use Diovan.

Diovan is FDA pregnancy category D, which means the drug can cause harm to the unborn babe and also to the newborn ones. It is better to avoid using Diovan during pregnancy. Though it is not known if the drug passes into breast milk, breast-feeding mothers should only take the drug after consulting the doctor.
