Cardizem is a drug used for treating hypertension
Cardizem is a drug used for treating hypertension, angina pectoris and certain heart rhythm disorders.
Belonging to a group of medicines called calcium channel blockers, Cardizem acts by slowing down the electrical conduction in the heart and normalising the heart rhythm.
The medicine has to be taken according to your prescription. Never take more of the drug or less or take the drug for longer periods unless your doctor wants it. The drug can be taken with a full glass of water but take care that the medicine is only swallowed. As Cardizem is an extended release capsule, it should not be broken, chewed or crushed as it would release too much of the drug into the body. But if you find it hard to swallow Cardizem, take out the granules, mix it in a spoonful of applesauce and take it. But take care that the granules are only swallowed. The mixture should not be used for further use.
You should have to complete the whole course of the medication for better results. It is not good to stop the drug in the middle of a course without talking to the doctor as it will worsen your conditions. Moreover, stick to the doses and do not miss it. In case you have forgotten to take a dose, take it when you realize it. But do not go for the missed dose if it is almost time for your regular dose. It is better not to mix any two doses of Cardizem.
Always be aware of overdose. If you come across symptoms like slow heartbeat, chest pain, weakness, shortness of breath and fainting, seek immediate help.
Once you know that your doctor is going to prescribe Cardizem, it is better to inform him about all your allergic reactions and also about your medical conditions. Just inform your doctor if you have liver/kidney disease or congestive heart failure. If you are having any of these, your doctor may go for a change in your dosages or recommend special monitoring.
Caidizem is FDA pregnancy category C, which means that the drug can cause birth defects. So pregnant women and those who wish to conceive should never take the drug. It is better not to get pregnant when taking Cardizem. The drug may pass into breast milk and so it will be better if breast feeding mothers do not feed their newborns while they are on Cardizem medication.
While taking Cardizem, you should avoid alcohol, grapefruit and grape juice as they only increase the risk of the side effects. Well, as any other drug, Carizem also interacts with other medicines. Tell your doctor about all your prescriptive and non prescriptive drugs, including vitamins, minerals, herbal drugs and diet supplements that you are taking.
Cardizem also comes with allergic reactions and also many side effects. If you come across any allergic reactions or any illness, you have to stop the drug and immediately contact the doctor.
The drug should be used only by those for whom it has been prescribed; never share the drug with others.
