Arcoxia for patients having arthritis and osteoarthritis

Arcoxia is a drug that is widely given for patients having rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. The drug is also advised for controlling ankylosing spondylitis and for relief from chronic musculoskeletal and acute pain. The drug is also administered for treating very sensitive gouty arthritis.

Arcoxia is generally prescribed for persons after other medicines have been experimented. Arcoxia is a drug that belongs to a cluster of medicines known as cyclooxygenase-2 or COX-2. The drug relieves the pain or inflammation by blocking the COX-2, which is a body enzyme. An advantage of using Arcoxia over other drugs is that this drug will not obstruct COX-1, which helps the stomach from getting ulcers.

Arcoxia dosage varies from one person to another and also from one disease to another. The recommended dosage of Arcoxia for osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal is 60 milligram per day, 90 milligram per day for rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. For Gout attacks, the daily recommended dosage is 120 milligram.

The drug has to be taken only under the guidance of a medical practitioner. In case a patient comes across chest pain, breath shortness and swelling in the ankles, he or she has to stop taking Arcoxia and approach the doctor urgently. Generally, only low doses of the medicine are given as higher doses are more risky. In case of high doses, there is a higher risk of strokes and heart attacks. Moreover, Arcoxia should only be taken for the specified period.

Arcoxia is never prescribed for persons having allergies to the contents of the drug. A person who had a heart attack or bypass surgery is normally not prescribed the drug as it increases the risk. The drug is not good for people having chest pain, peripheral arterial disease and stroke. Moreover, doctors do not take the risk if the person is having high pressure or had a major surgery. The drug is only for grown ups and not for children.

There is also a possibility that Arcoxia will not be prescribed for pregnant women and breast-feeding moms. If at all the doctor gives the drug, they would be under his constant watch. However, it is not known if Arcoxia passes into the foetus or into the breast milk.

When using Arcoxia, there are some medicines that have to be avoided as some of them could interact with Arcoxia. The doctors will not be advising Arcoxia if you are already using warfarin rifampicin, ACE inhibitors, diuretics, angiotensin receptors, lithium, birth control pills and methotrexate. If a person is using these medicines, the doctor is liable to change the dosage or advice other drugs.

Arcoxia is not free from side effects. Some of the lesser side effects include allergic reactions, taste alteration, insomnia, wheezing, confusion, anxiety, hallucinations, decrease in platelets, drowsiness and diarrhoea.

The severe effects with Arcoxia include swelling (face, tongue, lips, throat), breathing difficulty, swallowing problems, atrial fibrillation, palpitations, liver and kidney problems, stomach pain and ulcers. In case of these conditions, it is netter to contact the doctor at the earliest.
